  • On April 6, 1939, the agronomist Peter Aufschnaiter (1899-1973) as leader and the geographer Heinrich Harrer (1912-2006) as participants in an organized by the German Himalayan Foundation expedition to the eight-thousander Nanga Parbat in Kashmir. On the return trip, they were surprised by the outbreak of World War II and interned by the British army in northern India. Five years later, they managed to escape. On May 17, 1944 Aufschnaiter and Harrer reached the Tibetan Plateau. From west to east they moved towards Lhasa, where they settled.
